How does Cassy change throughout Wolf? Having read Wolf by Gillian Cross I thought it was quite an interesting book because it contained a lot of imagery. Wolf was about a girl called Cathleen Phelan (known throughout the book as Cassy) and her wrangle with her father Mick Phelan whose is part of the IRA (Irish Republic Army). The plot of the story is that Cassy’s grandmother gave Cassy some plastic explosives that she stole from Cassy’s father Mick and sent her to live with her mother Susan Phelan(known throughout the book as Goldie ). And throughout the story Cassy’s father was trying to get back his plastic explosives from Cassy, to finish the mission given by the IRA. The climax of the story was when Cassy’s father was ready to kill Cassy if she didn’t return his plastic explosives. Throughout Wolf Cassy’s personality and her way of thinking has definitely changed. This is because she lived with her Nan ever since her mother left her, since then she has taken like to her Nan and has built a negative persona of her mother. Throughout the book she doesn’t even call her mother instead she refers to her as Goldie. The reason she doesn’t like visiting her mother is because she thinks she is immature and irresponsible, she also doesn’t like her non- conventional way of living and thinking. Cassy and Nan are part of the workers class. They live in quite a small apartment and they don’t even own a phone so every time they need to call they use their neighbour Mrs Ramage’s phone. Cassy’s time spent with Goldie, Goldie’s boyfriend Lyall Cornelius and Lyall’s son Robert Cornelius, was frightful and life changing for her. At start the thought of living in a place where your disgusted by their lack of cleanliness was frightful, but soon she got accustom to it. She also got accustom to living with Goldie and said â€Å"Goldie’s all right as long as she doesn’t get too excited†- page 32. Her thoughts towards Lyall have also changed radically; at first the author had described Lyall with Wolf like characteristics such as having a black face with a fringe of grizzled beard. And thin bony ankles with long-toed feet and long fingers. But soon enough Cassy has found out that was considerate, kind and responsible. At first, Cassy thought that the Moongazer show was just play acting and she said â€Å"She [should] have guessed that Goldie wouldn’t be doing real work† page-30. But through her experiences of actually taking part in the show she knew that it wasn’t all that easy and that a lot of preparation and practice went into it. Living with her Nan her life had structure and security, but that all changed when she lives with her mother. The short time Cassy was living with her mother she has learnt more about her father than she ever knew living with her Nan because her Nan said â€Å"It’ll be time to tell you when you grow up†- page 47. It was all quite a rush for Cassy from only having a picture of her father looking into the distance to finding out that her father was part of the IRA. She had plenty of questions waiting to be answered, so she stood up for herself and demanded answers from her Nan through the post card. This is fairly out of character for her which means she must have changed. Little red riding hood has 3 main characters. Red riding hood, the wolf and the granny. Cassy is Red riding hood, her father Mick is the wolf and her Nan is the granny. The story is that Red riding hood wants to take a basket of food to her sick grandmother. So she starts upon her journey to her grandmother’s house through the forest. On the way the wolf asks her for the basket of food but Red riding hood refuses because it’s for her grandmother. So then the wolf goes to her grandmother’s house and hides her. When Red riding hood arrives the wolf pretends to be her grandmother in order to get the food. Red riding hood realises that so the wolf tries to eat her. Then the woodchopper comes and kills the wolf saving both Red riding hood and her grandmother. The Gillian Cross version of the story is: Cassie is on her way to her Nan’s house, where she comes across her dad who has tied Nan and put her in the bathtub. Cassy’s father is after the plastic explosives that Nan has given her. Cassy refuses to tell him where it is, so her father is ready to shoot Cassy. In that instance the police barge in and arrest him. Soon after Cassy finds out that Goldie is the one who saves her and her grandmother by calling the police. In conclusion, Cassy has definitely changed. She has become more mature through the series of events and has broken out of the robot aura that she has been living with her Nan.

In other words, its goal is to improve the social environment of communities, it is an organizations means of giving back to the community. This improvement is channeled through nurturing growth and development of communities, including elimination of detrimental practices that affect the public sphere. When a company is said to take part in corporate social responsibility, it means that they have ethical, social and moral responsibilities towards the community and society in which they are operating. Another important responsibility include in the CSR is the return given to investors and abiding by the national rules in the business dealings and functions. According to the traditional view of corporate social responsibility, it was related to the key stakeholders of the company only, which are its stockholders or owners. Many large multinational companies are in scope and will continue to face legal, social and ethical issues posed by the increasing globalization of trade. 2.5 Technology Issues Another contemporary social problems relating to technology and its impact on society. For example, the Internet has opened up many new opportunities for marketing goods and services, but also opened up new opportunities for abuse of the companies. Issues of privacy and security of confidential information is handled. Biotechnology companies face issues regarding the use of embryonic stem cells, genetic engineering and cloning. All these things are ethical and social implications. As technological capabilities continue to advance, it is likely that the liability of companies in this sector will increase significantly. Research shows that companies are developing a reputation for being socially responsive and ethical enjoy better performance. Corporate Social Responsibility in Kuwait: CSR is a tool that aids the organization on its mission and serves as dynamic guide as to the organizations principles. There is no formal act of legislation pertaining to CSR; however ISO 26000 is considered as an International Standard for CSR. Public sector organizations adopt the triple bottom line policy; People, Planet, Profit. Along with the mushrooming of multinational companies the scrutiny of their business activities have also increased. This means that organizations who adopt CSR policies have a greater chance of survival. Adoption of corporate responsibility supports business objectives; it results in increase in compliance, reputation and relationships which in turn increase shareholder value and profitability of the company. The International Business Report (IBR) 2008 states the three major reasons for incorporation of CSR in businesses are; Recruitment/Retention of Staff at 65%, Cost Management at 63% and Public attitudes/building brand at 56%. Other reasons perceived to promote CSR are tax reliefs that are provided by the government and investor relations. Tax reliefs are a tool that governments possess by which it may force a change in the attitudes of companies. This tool can be used to force companies to incorporate a CSR policy in their business models. Investors of the company have an impor tant say within company matters. Multinational companies are on the look for local and foreign investors. This provides Investor an edge to influence companies to adopt CSR plans. The Kuwait CSR conference, which is held annually, promotes incorporation of CSR within businesses and also discusses the performance enhancement that CSR offers. A CSR award ceremony held annually in Kuwait to appreciate the contributions made by organizations to Kuwaiti communities. This awards event honors companies for their achievements on the CSR front. Both the conference and award ceremony encourage organizations to adopt a CSR policy. A report by International Business Machines (IBM) Institute for Business Value voiced that companies are viewing CSR as a growth opportunity rather than a policy concerning regulatory-compliance or philanthropic issue. The report further states that 68% of the companies that were surveyed had interest in generating revenue through CSR based activities. Customer concern is considered to be the chief driver of CSR actions however 76% of companies state that they dont completely understand the customers CSR concerns while 16% of organizations claimed that they are able to engage with customers regarding CSR activities. The three major domains which have received contributions from organizations are health care, education and financing aid and charitable trusts. Within the health care domain, organizations sponsor construction of hospitals, medical centers as well as purchasing of equipment. Corporations also design programs that increase awareness of diseases and disorders among the population. In 1999, a telecommunications company; Zain, sponsored and supervised the construction of Sabah Ear-Nose-Throat Hospital. The Kuwaiti Projects Company (KIPCO) initiated a dyslexia campaign. Organizations aim to educate the local communities not only in traditional educational settings but also in educating in awareness of pollution of the environment, development of discipline and personal skills in young individuals, providing training to young professionals through internships. A Kuwait based multinational petrochemical company; EQUATE, sponsors educational programs, research programs and provides scholarships and awards for higher education. The company not only reaches out to students and educational institutes but also believes in knowledge transfer to regional companies. EQUATE also initiated the pollution free Kuwait campaign whose aims were to decrease the level of pollution in Kuwait and to create awareness of the effects of pollution within the masses (KMPG, 2010). The third area is that of financing relief efforts and charitable trust. Organizations donate allocated funds to trusts from their own accounts. Companies also allot a fixed portion of a sale towards charity. For Example, on the sale of a cell phone a company may forward 5% of its profit to chosen charity .Kuwait airways coupled with Kuwait Red Crescent to provide relief for the less privileged. This association resulted in the launch of a relief project Balsam, whose goals were to provide remedial measures for the needy. The collection of donations for this project is unique in its manner. Kuwait airways collected foreign currency donations from its passengers. These currencies were then forwarded to Kuwait Red Crescent where they were utilized as needed. Even though the report published by IBM Institute of for Business Value highlights that CSR is not focusing on compliance but on generation of revenue streams. The incorporation of CSR in local and multinational companies in Kuwait has provided a positive outlook to social activities. This not only has increased faith of the consumers within the companies but also has proven a source of proper ethical behavior for the companies themselves. 4. Example of Corporate social Responsibility in Kuwait: The Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) long been a leader in addressing environmental sustainability issues. In early 1990, Kuwait in front of the worst environmental disaster in recent history, in the wake of the late Iraqi government on the country. It produces excess heat, helium, and a very low level of neutrons. In some experiments the host metal has been transmuted into other elements. Cold fusion has been seen with palladium, titanium, nickel and with some superconducting ceramics.† (Infinite) In 1989 Stanley Pons and Martain Fleischmann announced to the press that they had discovered cold fusion. This announcement sent the scientific community in an uproar and the public news media went crazy. The public saw a new source of clean energy that had very little environmental effects. The scientific community saw a paper, which was not peer reviewed, of a scientific principle go out into the public without their consent. While the concept of cold fusion is contrary to the accepted views of physics, this small fact is not what had the community outraged. It was the way Pons and Fleischmann presented the experiment that caused problems. The accepted way of presenting research results within the scientific community is to first publish your experiment to the rest of the scientific community, have other scientist verify your results, and then only after your results have been tested and verified should you go to the press. The theories behind cold fusion are contrary to popular theory and therefore naturally run up against great resistance. Theories on why cold fusion is observed are still being developed, but a definitive theory is yet to be reached. There is a need for a new theory because cold fusion has been observed in such a verity of experiments that the possibility of error is not probable. The overwhelming number of experiments that have produced an effected dubbed ‘cold fusion’ forces a new theory to be considered. Until a new theory is prescribed the world will have to do without the potential energy source of cold fusion.
